URBNSURF Sydney is Sydney’s first urban surf park, located at 15 Hill Road, Sydney Olympic Park. Opened in May 2024, the $75 million, 3.6-hectare facility brings consistent, ocean-like waves to Western Sydney, just 13–20 minutes from the CBD and Sydney Airport.
At the heart of the project is a large Wavegarden Cove lagoon capable of generating up to 400 waves per hour, ranging from gentle beginner whitewater to steep barrels for advanced surfers. The precinct also includes a leisure swimming pool, surf academy, skate pad, Rip Curl retail store, health and wellness centre, and two dining venues (RAFI and Sandy’s). The facility is designed to welcome over 1,000 visitors daily and operates from early morning until late evening.
The Challenge: Durable Reinforcement in a High-Moisture, High-Traffic Water Environment Surf parks and aquatic leisure facilities create demanding conditions for reinforced concrete. Constant water exposure, chemical treatment of pool and lagoon water, cyclic loading from wave generation, and high public foot traffic all accelerate corrosion in traditional steel reinforcement.
Areas such as lagoon surrounds, pool decks, pathways, slabs and other water-adjacent concrete elements required a long-lasting, corrosion-free reinforcement solution that would maintain structural integrity with minimal maintenance over decades of continuous use.
The Solution: 3,000 sqm of High-Performance GFRP Mesh We supplied 3,000 square metres of BlackBar™ GFRP mesh (glass fibre reinforced polymer / FRP composite mesh) for critical concrete elements across the URBNSURF Sydney project.
GFRP mesh delivers the same key advantages as GFRP rebar while providing efficient, large-area reinforcement:
- Completely corrosion-resistant — ideal for constant moisture, chlorinated or chemically treated water environments
- Lightweight yet high-tensile strength, making installation faster and safer on large slab and deck areas
- Excellent durability in marine-style and aquatic leisure applications
- Non-conductive and electromagnetically neutral
- Fully compliant with Australian Standard AS 5204
The 3,000 sqm of GFRP mesh provided reliable, non-metallic reinforcement across key water-exposed and high-traffic zones, supporting the long-term performance of this landmark recreational facility.
Project Outcomes and Benefits By specifying high-performance GFRP mesh, URBNSURF Sydney benefits from:
- Superior resistance to corrosion in lagoon, pool and wet-area concrete
- Reduced risk of cracking, spalling and costly future repairs
- Faster installation due to the lightweight nature of the mesh
- Alignment with the project’s modern, durable and sustainable design goals
The completed facility now offers year-round perfect waves and a vibrant lifestyle precinct, contributing significant recreational and economic value to Sydney Olympic Park and Western Sydney.
