Project Overview

Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport is Australia’s first greenfield international airport in more than 50 years and Sydney’s first curfew-free, 24-hour airport. Stage 1 provides a 3.7 km Code F runway, taxiways, airside roads, drainage, aeronautical ground lighting and a new cargo precinct, and is designed to handle up to 10 million passengers a year from opening in late 2026.

CPB Contractors, in joint venture with Acciona, delivered the Airside Civil and Pavement package and is also delivering Stage 1 Cargo Works for WSA Co. Beyond Materials supplied BlackBar™ GFRP mesh to CPB Contractors for concrete works on the precinct.

The Challenge: Durability and Systems Compatibility on a Live Airport Precinct

Airport concrete is exposed to fuel and hydraulic-fluid spills, wash-down chemicals, persistent moisture in drainage structures, and the long-term demands of a 24-hour aviation asset. Conventional steel mesh is vulnerable to corrosion in these conditions and can interfere with aeronautical ground lighting, communications and navigation systems because it is magnetic and electrically conductive.

The works required reinforcement that would remain durable for the life of the asset, avoid electromagnetic interference, and remain practical to place on a congested, programme-driven airport site.

The Solution: GFRP Mesh for Airport Concrete Works

BlackBar™ GFRP mesh (glass fibre reinforced polymer / fiberglass reinforced polymer mesh) was supplied as a prefabricated alternative to steel mesh.

GFRP mesh was selected for its performance in demanding infrastructure environments:
